Almighty eternal God, source of all compassion,
the promise of your mercy and saving help fills our hearts with hope.
Hear the cries of the people of Syria;
bring healing to those suffering from the violence,
and comfort to those mourning the dead.
Empower and encourage Syria’s neighbors
in their care and welcome for refugees.
Convert the hearts of those who have taken up arms,
and strengthen the resolve of those committed to peace.
O God of hope and Father of mercy,
your Holy Spirit inspires us to look beyond ourselves and our own needs.
Inspire leaders to choose peace over violence
and to seek reconciliation with enemies.
Inspire the Church around the world with compassion for the people of Syria,
and fill us with hope for a future of peace built on justice for all.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and Light of the World,
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
A Prayer for the People of Syria - Prayer is adapted from Catholics
Confront Global Poverty , a collaborative effort of USCCB and Catholic Relief
Fasting is the soul of
prayer; mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them;
they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all together, you
have nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your
petition to be heard, hear the petition of others.
God of mercy, as you
send us forgiven us so you send us forth to bear your message of mercy to all.
Give us willing feet and gentle hands. Bless us with listening ears and searching
eyes. Endow us with understanding minds. Ordain us with compassionate hearts.
In our acts and in our words make us vessels of your mercy to reach out to the
broken on behalf of the Father who wipes away our debts as lovingly as he wipes
away our tears and calls his children home. Help us to lift your people in body
and spirit. And so make every year a year of mercy. Amen.
Vessels of Mercy, Catholic Relief Services Prayer for the Year of Mercy
Keep me, O God, from
pettiness; let me be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let me be done with
fault-finding and self-seeking. May I put away all pretense and meet everyone
face to face without self-pity and without prejudice. May in never be hasty in judgement
and always generous. Let me take time for all things. Make me grow calm,
serene, and gentle. Teach me to put into action my better impulses,
straightforward and unafraid. Grant that I may realize it is the little things
of life that create differences and that in the big things in life we are one.
And, O Lord God, let me not forget to be kind!
